Effects, mixing and export

Balance the tracks, add effects, make a guitar sound like a guitar, and check the mix before you export it.

The mixer

Press Mixer at the top. Each track has a fader, pan, M (mute), S (solo), R (arm) and, in Advanced, FX for its effects. The Master strip at the end is what everyone hears.

Adding effects

  1. In Advanced, press FX on a track (or on the master).
  2. Pick an effect in Effect to add and press Add effect. Or start from a ready chain under Start from a preset…: Guitar clean, Guitar crunch, Guitar lead, Bass, Vocal, Acoustic.
  3. Turn the knobs. The sound goes through the effects from top to bottom; use the arrows to change the order, or bypass one to compare.
  4. Made a chain you like? Save… keeps it as your own preset.

A guitar sound

  1. Record the guitar on an input track (plugged into your interface, no amp).
  2. Open FX and choose Start from a preset…: Guitar crunch for rock, Guitar lead for solos and heavy parts.
  3. Adjust the amp's gain to taste. For a real speaker sound, press Load IR… on the cabinet and choose an impulse response (.wav) of a cabinet.

Too much gain turns a guitar into noise. Heavy tones come from a tight gate and a little less gain than you'd think.

Automation

Make the volume, pan or an effect knob change during the song.

  1. Press A on a track (Advanced).
  2. Choose what to automate in Automated parameter.
  3. Click in the lane to add points, drag them to move, right-click to delete. Switch the lane on or off to compare.

Headphone mixes

Recording with others in the room? + Mix in the mixer (Advanced) makes a separate mix for an output of your interface: more of themselves, the click, less of the rest.

Check the mix and export

  1. File ▾ then Export… (Ctrl+E).
  2. Press Check the mix. JamSesh listens to the mix and every track and lists what is wrong: clipping, distortion, noise, parts fighting for the low end, a chorus that doesn't lift. Go to bar takes you there.
  3. Choose the Range (Whole song or Loop region), Sample rate and Format, and press Export.
