Getting started

From the first start to your first saved project: sound out, how much of the app to show, and where everything lives.

The first start

When JamSesh opens for the first time, a short welcome tour checks that you can hear it.

  1. Under Sound comes out of, pick your speakers or headphones.
  2. Press ▶ Play a test sound. Heard it? Press I can hear it.
  3. Choose how much to show: Simple (the essentials: record, loop, play) or Advanced (everything: mixer, effects, controllers, plugins). You can change this any time.
  4. Press Start making music.

You can see the tour again any time: ? at the top right, then Welcome tour.

Simple, Advanced and Kids

The Mode menu at the top right sets how much of JamSesh you see. Nothing is lost when you switch: hidden things keep working.

  • Advanced shows everything.
  • Simple hides effects (FX), automation, MIDI routing, controller mappings, headphone mixes, the pitch-correction slider and the four-deck DJ view.
  • Kids turns the whole window into big pads and loop buttons with a capped volume. See Kids mode.

Sound in and out

Open ⚙ (audio device settings) to choose what JamSesh plays through and records from.

  1. Pick a Driver: Shared works with everything through Windows; Exclusive gives lower delay but takes the device for itself; ASIO is for audio interfaces that come with an ASIO driver.
  2. Choose the Output, and under Inputs press + Add input for each microphone or interface you record from.
  3. Set the Buffer: smaller is less delay, bigger is safer. Start with Default.
  4. Press Apply.

Clicks or gaps in the sound? A counter like 3 dropouts appears at the top. Choose a bigger buffer in ⚙.

Recordings late? Latency correction (ms) moves recordings back in time by that much.

Saving and opening

  • File ▾ then Save (Ctrl+S) saves the project as a .jamsesh file. Its recordings and samples are kept in a folder next to it called <name> media: keep the two together.
  • Open… (Ctrl+O) opens a JamSesh project, or a .dawproject from another DAW.
  • If JamSesh closes before you saved, it offers a copy of your work the next time: Restore or Throw away.

Help and problems

  • ? then Keyboard shortcuts lists every shortcut. See also Shortcuts.
  • Something went wrong? ? then Report a problem (save diagnostics)… saves a file you can send us. It holds no songs, recordings or session codes.
  • If your audio device disconnects, playback pauses and JamSesh reconnects by itself; Open settings takes you to ⚙.
